AUSTRALIAN-The Australian Army in World War II

This book recounts the organization and deployment of one of the most important fighting armies of World War II. Australian divisions made a large and distinctive contribution to victory both in the deserts of the Middle East and the jungles of the South-West Pacific, earning for the second time a unique reputation for aggressiveness, endurance and independence of spirit. The text is illustrated with original wartime photos from all fronts; and with full colour plates showing a wide range of uniforms and gear, together with the complex and colourful
Australian system of unit insignia.

Black Powder Supplement Volume 3: The Last Argument of Kings

At the beginning of the 18th century, warfare entered a new era. The widespread use of the flintlock musket had transformed the way armies trained and fought. This period was a golden age for the crowned heads of Europe. They commanded professional troops, gloriously outfitted in splendid uniforms, and fought each other over land, wealth and the succession to their thrones. Some even led their armies on the field of battle. Yet by the end of the century, the real power of kings was gone or greatly eroded – parliaments would decide the foreign policy of nations, democracy had taken hold in the New World and the divine right of kings was everywhere being questioned.

These were the last wars fought to protect the succession rights of royalty. These wars were the Last Argument of Kings.

This supplement for the Black Powder game overviews the main conflicts and armies of this period, and includes army lists and special rules to enable you to refight these wars using the Black Powder rules, as well as scenarios for the most dramatic battles of the time. Featured conflicts include:

  • The War of the Spanish Succession – the Battle of Blenheim (1704)
  • The Great Northern War – the Battle of Holowczyn (1708)
  • The Austro-Turkish Wars – the Battle of Petrovardin (1716)
  • The War of the Austrian Succession – the Battle of Fontenoy (1745)
  • The Wars of the English Succession – the 1745 Rebellion
  • The Seven Years’ War – the Battle of Hundorf (1762)
  • War in the Colonies – The French Indian War & The War in India
  • Raids and Invasions – Amphibious Warfare in the 18th Century

This is a full colour 112 page softback book.

Bolt Action – Defenders of France Boxed Set

Bolt Action French – Defenders of France Boxed Set

Although much has been written of the German armoured forces and the defeat of the British at Dunkirk in the dark days of 1940, much too little has been written about the gallant stands made by the French army.

The French started World War II as the most powerful army in the world. Well equipped, with good tanks and artillery, the infantry divisions were numerous and confident of fighting off the hated Boche as they had been twenty two years before. This was not the same war and the French infantryman found himself all too often fighting off German armoured units which had outmanoeuvred them with ease.

Their weapons were adequate, but only just, and it was for the honour of France and their regiment that so many Frenchmen dug in and fought it out against a more scientific and deadly foe. By the time of the cease fire they had killed 27,000 Germans but had suffered appalling losses of nearly 100,000 dead and 250,000 wounded. It was a big price to pay and Frenchmen went on to fight against the Allies with Vichy France, ensuring admiration and loathing in equal measure.

Warlord Games’ tough infantry are equipped as a standard squad with command and support weapons attached…

Defenders of France contains:

Command: 1 Officer with pistol, 1 Sergeant with rifle, 1 Corporal with rifle grenade launcher and 2 soldiers with carbines

12 man section: Sergeant with rifle, Corporal with rifle, 2-man Hotchkiss LMG team, 7 riflemen and 1 soldiers with rifle grenade launchers

Bolt Action – French Army 81mm medium mortar team

Bolt Action French – French Army 81mm medium mortar team

This pack is a great support choice, the Brandt 81mm mortar. Just prior to the war, the French army could field 2000 British 3”mortars, but it was of a metric calibre of 81mm. By the outbreak of war, French regiments could put out 9 x 60mm mortars and 8 x 81mm mortars, totalling 8000 in total. Mortars can put down short savage barrages that were justly feared by infantry on all sides. Gamers tip; one mortar is never enough….

Bolt Action – French Army MMG team

Bolt Action French – French Army MMG team

The classic Hotchkiss medium machine gun had served France well in the Great war, and went on again, as did the Vickers in the British army to give solid reliable firepower to companies in defence and supporting fire on the advance. Rugged, slow firing but dependable , it was a good enough weapon for the Great war, but was showing its age, particularly against the German weaponry of 1940.

Bolt Action – French Renault R35 Tank

Designed in 1933 and produced from 1936, the Renault R35 was intended as a light infantry support tank, equipping autonomous tank battalions, that would be allocated to individual infantry divisions to assist them in executing offensive operations. It was relatively well-armoured but slow and lacking a good antitank-capacity, fitted with a short 37 mm gun.

At the outbreak of the war, the anti-tank role was more emphasized leading to the development and eventual production from April 1940 of a subtype with a more powerful longer gun, the Renault R40. It was planned to shift new production capacity to the manufacture of other, faster, types, but due to the defeat of France the R35/40 remained the most numerous French tank of the war, about 1685 vehicles having been produced in June 1940.

R35’s were also exported to Poland, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia. The Germans and their allies would also use captured vehicles.

Bolt Action – French Squad (10)

For all the glamour and so called ferocity of the German armoured troops, it was troops like these, the brave French infantryman who faced up to them and inflicted upwards of 140 000 casualties on the invading German columns in 1940.Their uniforms were dated , though practical, and indeed in 1939 it was deemed the strongest army in the world. The infantry division had 17000 men and 500 officers , made up of three regiments , a regiment composing 3000 men and 80 officers.

Each battalion was made up of 3 companies of four officers and 190 men,the company divided into a HQ section with a 60mm mortar and four platoons each of three sections, and a heavy weapons company of 4 officers and 190 men with 16 machine guns , two 25mm a/t guns and two 81mm mortars.

Riflemen were equipped broadly with the MAS 36 rifle, a sound and accurate design with a 5 round mag. Section support was given by the reliable if pedestrian FM24/29 light machine gun , the assistant gunner armed with pistol only. A few mAS38 sub machine guns were delivered late on as were a few Thompson guns , but all were uncommon.

These men dug in and fought hard against the German forces and stopped the Italians in their tracks, thousands of them evading capture and making it to England to carry on the battle for France. Many , it has to be said ,also fought against the British,Americans and Free French as the Vichy forces defended the French Empire fiercely from Allied designs.

The section comprises an NCO with rifle, 1 with VB launcher, 2-man LMG team and 6 riflemen

Bolt Action – Italian Army squad-ordered on demand

Bolt Action – Italian Infantry

The average Italian infantrymen were conscripts with little enthusiasm for Fascist expansionism. However, they found themselves fighting hard in many theatres of World War II, far from home, and in extreme climates.

The Italian Army’s equipment was somewhat outdated, if reliable, and the officer class were often careless with their men’s conditions. Despite all of this, the Italian infantry fought very hard at times, and when in prepared positions, famously difficult to oust.

The squad used fire and manoeuvre tactics with the Breda light machine gun being the section’s main firepower.

Bolt Action Italian – Italian M13/40 light tank

The M13/40 series was Italy’s most-produced tank of the war, it was a conventional light tank of the early war period, similar in capability to other Vickers-derived designs such as the Polish 7TP and Soviet T-26.

Having a 47mm long barrelled gun made it more than a match for the British tanks of 1940-41. In April 1941, at the time of the arrival of the Afrika Korps, the Italians had a good number of M13 in first-line service.

Bolt Action – Polish Army infantry section – 10 PER PACK (image displays 12)

The Polish infantry section was a powerful fighting force, comprising of up to 19 men. The riflemen were equipped with Mauser bolt-action rifles and the squad support weapon was the well proven Polish-made Browning automatic rifle, or RKM WZ.28. This machine gun was adequate for most of its roles but would be overpowered by the shattering rate of fire of German MG34’s.

The Polish infantryman of our period was well trained and highly motivated, attacked as he was on two fronts in a dastardly move by two of the world’s most aggressive powers.

This pack contains a random assortment of 10 metal figures, supplied unpainted.

Bolt Action – Polish Infantry Boxed Set-ordered on demand

Bolt Action Polish – Polish Infantry Boxed Set

The Polish army that fought and died so bravely in 1939 was large, well-officered and relatively well equipped. It fought hard, but was entirely outmanoeuvred by fast moving German armoured thrusts supported by all arms in a new dynamic style of war that a largely foot slogging army could not match. When the Russians stabbed them in the back, dividing Poland into two, it was all too much for an already over extended army short of armour and air support and the end was inevitable.

That being said there were many desperate actions fought where the Poles fought the invaders to a standstill, and the stolid infantry held their ground and their dashing cavalry caught the enemy napping.

This box contains 24 models with a classic rifle section and their accompanying Browning Automatic Rifle. To take control of the action we also include a command group with a young junior officer, NCO, runners and the Polish deadly anti-tank rifle.

Bolt Action – Puma Sd.Kfz 234/2 Armoured Car

The Puma is, arguably, one of the best-looking armoured cars of WWII. A variant of the Sdkfz 234 it boasted a fully enclosed turret with a 5cm gun and thicker armour than other variants. Despite this additional armour the Puma was still capable of speeds greater than 50 miles per hour (that’s 85km) and saw use as a scout vehicle from 1943 onwards on both Eastern and Western fronts, as even the thickened armour didn’t offer much in the way of protection.

The fully enclosed turret of the Puma variant had a KwK 30 50mm gun.

Bolt Action – Soviet Infantry plastic box set

Bolt Action – Soviet Infantry plastic box set

These are the men who fought ferociously to defend Mother Russia from the German invasion of 1941 through to the fall of Berlin in 1945. Simple peasant soldiers, they were taught to obey orders and do as they were told. Their life was hard and their battles probably unequalled in history for scale and suffering.

The Russian divisions grew from a disorganised mass to a fully capable and experienced force of modern infantry in just a few short years, a deadly weapon tempered in the cauldron of battle against the German invaders.

“Quantity has a quality of its own” said Joseph Stalin, alluding to the huge numbers of men he could put into the field. Well-equipped with simple, solid weaponry the Soviet soldier was a terror in attack and the very devil in defence as the legendary sieges of Leningrad and Stalingrad hold in stark testimony.

This box gives you a platoon of grim Russian infantry with a variety of equipment and weaponry. Assemble your men, fix bayonets, look to your front and don’t let the Commissar see you lag behind…

Soviet Infantry contains:
Enough plastic components to make 40 Soviet Union infantry miniatures. Includes a host of options to allow for different weapon configurations and command models.

Weapons included:
Moisin Nagant rifle (scoped, with bayonet and without), PTRD Anti-tank rifle, submachine guns (PPS-43 , PPSh-41 and PPD-40), Moisin Nagant carbine, DT-28 light machine gun, Tokarev semi-automatic rifle (and bayonet version), pistols and captured Panzerfaust!
Round plastic bases (25mm diameter).

BOLT ACTION GERMANY STRIKES EARLY WAR IN EUROPE

In 1939, Germany shattered the peace of Europe with a lightning-fast strike against Poland. The next year, it captured Denmark and Norway, before launching its famous Blitzkrieg against France, Belgium and The Netherlands. In less than two years of fighting, Nazi Germany became the master of mainland Europe.

This new Theatre Book for Bolt Action allows players to command armies of German tanks driving across the continent or to lead the desperate defense of the outgunned Allied armies. New scenarios, special rules and units give players everything they need to recreate the devastating battles and campaigns of the early war in Europe, including the fall of Poland, the breaking of the Maginot Line and the dramatic retreat to Dunkirk.

‘GERMANY STRIKES!’ PREVIEW BY ALESSIO CAVATORE

May 13, 2015 – Bolt Action, Bolt Action – British, Bolt Action – German, Bolt Action – Polish – Tagged: Bolt Action, British, Germany, Polish
Alessio: Following the release of Battleground Europe and Ostfront, the “Theatre books” supplements for Bolt Action continue with Germany Strikes! – Early war in Europe. In this article I’m going to explain in a little more detail what you’re going to find in each of the seven sections of this new book.

PRELUDE TO WAR

This introduction sets the scene for the countdown to World War II, the first great mechanised war, with a discussion of the development of tank technology and the various theories about how they should be used. In particular the section compares and contrasts the development of armoured warfare in France, Britain and Germany and how the theories fared in the Spanish Civil War and Khalkyn Gol. It finishes with arguments to show that the German military were woefully deficient in strategic thinking despite perfecting the tactical and operational skills necessary for mechanised warfare.

The supplement adds new armies, theatre selectors and vehicle rules to cover the novel situations encountered in the early war.

FALL WEISS, POLAND

Fall Weiss covers the German invasion of Poland. It includes four new scenarios ranging from the very first shots of WWII when the SS & Armed German Police stormed the fortified Polish Post Office in Danzig to the fighting retreat of the famous Black Brigade – the Polish armoured unit that never lost a battle and formed the core of the Polish Armour that closed the gap at Falaise in 1944. New rules allow you to deploy armoured trains and to fight inside buildings. New Theatre Selectors include early German Militia, 4th panzer Division, Polish Armour and Cavalry.

OPERATION WESERÜBUNG, DENMARK & NORWAY

Where Hitler ‘caught the bus’ to Norway. This section adds two scenarios, one set in Denmark and one in Norway, and rules for the Neubaufahrzeug PzKpw V model A multi turreted tank. It adds a new Danish Army list with rules for Danish vehicles such as Landsverk light and heavy armoured cars, and theatre selectors for The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Kampfgruppe Pellengahr and a generic Allied Norway Defence Force.

FALL GELB, THE LOW COUNTRIES

Fall Gelb was the German feint through the Low Countries to draw the allied armoured divisions north into a pocket created by the mechanised attack through the Ardennes. The section adds five new scenarios ranging from the German air landings on Fort Eben Emael to the British armoured counter-attack at Arras by the Matilda tanks of Frankforce. The armoured actions around Orp between French mechanised cavalry and the panzers were the world’s first great tank battle and this section shows how to replay them.

New theatre selectors are given for the Fallschirmjäger, the Belgian Defenders of Fort Eben Emael, French DLM, DLC and DCR mechanised divisions, British 1st Armoured Division (cruiser tanks) and a 1st Army Tank Brigade (infantry tanks), and German Mobile Infantry Divisions and the various Panzer Divisions that took part in the campaign.

FALL ROT, FRANCE

The section examines the German offensive south into France, including the attack on the Maginot line, and the Italian invasion of the Riviera. The latter adds an hypothetical scenario of a French counterattack on Milan which allows an Italian player to fight an armoured battle. New theatre selectors include a British Dunkirk Perimeter Force, a scratch-built French DLC Division and the Ariete. New scenario rules explain how to game the fortifications of the Maginot Line.

SO THIS IS VICTORY

A final section wraps up the game with a short discussion of the stunning but ultimately flawed victory that doomed Germany in the west and asks if Germany had better options that might have won the war.

NEW SCENARIO RULES

This appendix closes the book with a collection of all of the special rules used throughout the various scenarios. Here you will find rules for:

Armoured Trains

Polish and German Gun Wagons

Command and Assault Wagons

Flat Cars

Self-Propelled Armoured Rail Wagons

Minefields

Clearing Minefields

Some of these rules have been published before, and are collected here for your convenience, and some are entirely new. The largest and most important additions are the rules for Armoured Trains and attacking fortifications.

And to conclude, here’s a message from the book’s author, John Lambshead;

The Blitzkrieg era has always fascinated me because it is the period where new technology dramatically changed the art of war as nations struggled to develop weapons and doctrines in an era of rapid technological advance. Mechanised warfare was an unknown so a wide variety of machines, formations and tactics were tried. This makes for a rich and colourful wargaming environment. Later things settled down and armies began to more resemble each other.

I hope everyone gets as much fun out of using this book as I got from writing it. Many thanks to all at Warlord Games and River Horse for giving me the opportunity.

Britain- CS9 Armoured Car

In April 1939, the LAC entered service with the Royal Tank Corps. Thirty-eight of the CS9 were given in to the 12th Royal Lancers, replacing the model 1928 4×6 Lanchesters. These were part of the BEF, participating in the Battle of France and Flanders, where all were destroyed or abandoned near Dunkirk. The other 30 served with the 11th Hussars, and were shipped to participate in the North African campaign, together with WW1-era Rolls-Royce LACs. It was found that, when fitted with desert tires, the vehicle had good performance on soft sand. However, its armor and armament were insufficient. The vehicle was retired halfway through the North African campaign. These vehicles participated in the desert war against the Italian 10th Army and used until 1943, some being captured and reused by German and Italian troops.

BRITISH CROMWELL TANK ITALERI 1/56 SCALE KIT

The British had at the beginning of the Second World War in Europe the Churchill tank, heavily armored but very slow and unable to fight against most German tanks.

Very quickly after the start of production of the Churchill tank in 1940, the British decided to develop a new tank, this time more mobile. Thus was born the Cromwell tank and its production began in 1942.

Its 75 mm gun could not face the firepower of German tanks, however its mobility and its speed were significantly bigger. But this increase of mobility automatically decreased the size of the shielding, which made the Cromwell tank more vulnerable, despite its speed.

As with the American tank hunter M10 Destroyer, the Cromwell Mk IV tank model had always to have the initiative in order to win the battle. Once the combat engaged, the Cromwell no longer rely on its mobility. Therefore, it is often engaged to support the actions of the infantry.

The Cromwell tank was present on the Mediterranean and north-west Europe battlefields, especially during the battle of Normandy and Operation Market-Garden in Holland.

BRITISH JTFM BISHOP SELF PROPELLED GUN

One hundred Bishops were built by July 1942, and nearly all of them were used in the North African campaigns, although some continued in action in Sicily and in the first few weeks of the Italy campaign. It was replaced as soon as possible by the American built 105mm M7 Priest or the Canadian 25-pdr Sexton. As a design to meet an emergency, the Bishop served its purpose adequately at an important time of the war, but perhaps the Bishops most useful function was as an instructional vehicle to teach regiments the rudiments of self-propelled gun tactics.

BRITISH JTFM CENTAUR MK IV TANK

For most of World War II, British tank development remained faithful to the design philosophy inaugurated during World War I. Experiences in North Africa highlighted flaws in this basic design, however, and the General Staff identified the need for a new heavy cruiser that could combine speed and manoeuvrability with increased armour and armament. The Cromwell Cruiser tank was designed as a result and soon proved itself one of the fastest and most successful tanks deployed by the Allies during World War II. This book details the design and development of the Cromwell and its many variants, from its introduction at D-Day, through its many successes in the final year of World War II and beyond.

Tetrarch tanks were used during the battle of Normandy during Operation Mallard in the 6th Airborne Division on D-Day. Unable to compete with the German tanks, they are used in support of the infantry until August 1944 before being replaced by other Allied tanks.

Withdrawn from the front after their engagement in Normandy, the Tetrarch are used in training in Britain until 1950.

BRITISH JTFM VALENTINE MKIII

The Valentine III appeared in late 1941 and was one of the most produced versions of the entire series. The great improvement came with a completely redesigned turret, with a new internal mantlet and an enlarged turret basket, giving the much needed extra room to accommodate a loader to operate the gun, freeing the commander for other tasks. As a compensation for the added weight, the side armor was somewhat downgraded from 60 to 50 mm (2.36-1.97 in). The main gun was now a QF 2 pounder Mk.V.

Fireforge Games – Sergeants at Arms

Sergeants-at-Arms were first raised by Philippe II Augustus of France in 1911, during the Third Crusade, as a bodyguard against the Assassins. There were never many of them and they fought alongside the rest of the army as part of the royal familia. Richard I of England had 24 with him on the Crusades. They were formed into a 20 strong Corps of Sergeants-at-Arms by King Edward in1278,as a mounted close escort. In 1399 King Richard II limited the corps to 30 Sergeants, and King Charles II had 16. During the 13th Century most of the European Kings likewise established bodies of Sergeants-at-Arms. They carried a mace bearing the royal arms as a symbol of office but their armament included a crossbow as well as a short lance and a shield. This box set contains twelve 28mm multi-part plastic Sergeants at Arms with a mixture of barded and unbarded horses. You can build several types of Sergeants with a choice of many weapons among which you’ll find crossbows for assembling Mounted Crossbowmen units. Figures are supplied unpainted and require some assembly. The box contains enough plastic bases for Deus Vult gaming system: 50mm x 50mm = 3 bases 25mm x 50mm = 6 bases   Figures are supplied unpainted and require some assembly.

FRANCE JTFM CHAR LEGER MODELE R 35 TANK

The Renault R35 was developed as a light infantry tank in 1926 to replace the FT.17 of World War 1. It was armed with a low velocity 37mm cannon and a single machine gun for this purpose. Against the German Panzers of the day it didn’t stand a chance. Additionally the tank required it’s commander to act as it’s loader and gunner as well. This would cause the Commander to be constantly busy with the general running of the turret and he would have no time to actually command.

General Washington’s Army (2)

Author: Marko Zlatich
Illustrator: Bill Younghusband
About this book
For the early years of the American War of Independence, George Washington’s troops were clothed in a variety of uniforms from various sources. With the receipt in late 1778 of over 25,000 uniforms imported from France, much of the Continental army was uniformly clothed in blue or brown coats faced with red. This study by Marko Zlatich focuses on the systems used by state and Continental authorities to procure clothing materials from this point onwards, the quantities they obtained and the specifications of the uniforms themselves. Eight colour plates by the talented Bill Younghusband and a plethora of black and white photographs and illustrations usefully support the author’s detailed text. Men-at-Arms 273, 285, 289, 290 and 292 are also available in a single volume special edition as ‘Soldiers of the Revolutionary War’.

GERMAN 1/56 ITALERI TIGER I

When it was introduced, the Tiger was the most powerful tank in the world. The 88mm gun was extremely powerful and the heavy armor made it almost impervious to attack. Even though its fearsomeness was to grow to almost mythical proportions, its combat debut was less than impressive.

The first 4 Tigers to see combat were sent to the Leningrad area in August of 1942. Unfortunately they were deployed single file over swampy terrain and in their first day of combat all four were knocked out, although their armor was not penetrated. Three were later recovered. In spite of this bad start, Tiger tactics were soon developed and other units were quickly trained and equipped with the Tiger. By the end of 1942, Tiger formations had been deployed to Russia, Africa, and Italy. Training centers were established in both Germany and France and eventually Tigers would be in service with ten Heer heavy tank battalions, one training battalion, three SS heavy tank battalions, and the Grossdeutschland Panzer Grenadier Division . A few additional formations received limited numbers of Tigers.

The Tigers built an impressive record in Russia during 1943 and ’44. They destroyed tremendous amounts of enemy equipment and often just the sight of a Tiger would induce the Russian tankers to withdraw. They had similiar success in North Africa and Italy, creating a powerful psychological effect on Allied troops. On Feb. 1, 1943 the British captured a Tiger intact and subsequently performed exhaustive tests on it. To their dismay, they found the Tiger was indeed an excellent gun platform and extremely well protected from all but their biggest anti-tank guns.

GERMAN ARMY GRENADIER 1944-1945

The author – Stephen Andrew, is well known for his excellent work and artistry of the German soldier especially in the Osprey “Men at Arms” series, as well as some of the Concord series of publications. These would show an illustration of a soldier and then a description of what he was wearing and the particulars of why he was wearing them. These books are cherished by their owners as an excellent source or research. Stephen started his own series of Publications called “Landser books” (Landser was the name of the common German Infantryman) – in 2010 and this book was published first in 2011 and is still in print.
This title “German Army Grenadier 1944-45” – is the first in a planned series by the author which shows you the equipment and ordinance of the soldier in a specific part of a conflict. I suppose wisely this book is set in the best-selling market – the German army of the late war period. Small in page numbers at 34 pages – it is a fairly considerable amount of information which has been crammed into those pages. The large format pages of 29cm (h) x 22cm (w) are covered with a soft glossy binder and the pages inside are of good quality stock paper. The book is split mostly in a layout of text on one page and the illustrations of each of the soldiers it describes or their equipment on the other page.

There are also many black and white archive photographs, some taken from the author’s personal collection which have never before reproduced before. GERMAN JTFM STUGIV MIT SCHURZEN

Originally the German assault gun was designed as an infantry support weapon, but the changing conditions of the battlefields of the Second World War forced it to adapt to perform a number of different roles, most importantly as a tank destroyer, although the infantry support role was never wholly discarded. If the much-glamorised Panzer divisions were the sword of the German army then the assault gun and tank destroyer units were its shield. As the Panzers’ grip on the battlefield began to fail, though, it was left to the assault gun and tank destroyer crews to take up the burden.

GERMAN JTFM TIGER II HENSCHEL PRODUCTION TURRET

As World War II entered its later stages and Germany was forced increasingly onto the defensive, the need for fast-moving mobile forces lessened and the Wehrmacht required better protected and more powerfully armed tanks. After debacles against the T-34, Hitler and the Panzerwaffe were determined not to be unprepared again. The result of this determination was the production of the heaviest and largest tank to see combat during World War II, the Tiger II or Konigstiger (Kingtiger).

GERMAN PANZER III ITALERI 1/56 SCALE KIT

The Ausf. G was still equipped with the feeble 37 mm (1.46 in) KwK 38. Apart from the mantlet armor increase, there were almost no notable differences between this type and former Fs. 600 were built in all. Like the Ausf. E, F and the later H and J, they were all upgraded with a new 50 mm (1.97 in) KwK 38 L42 gun, prior to operation Barbarossa. This came after a long struggle with the Waffenamt, and added the requisite firepower to such a medium tank. For the first time, the Ausf. H (308 built) incorporated much-needed additional bolted armor on the frontal glacis, and the rear plates. These 30 mm (1.18 in) plates led to a total of 60 mm (2.36 in) of frontal protection. However, the sides were still 30 mm (1.18 in) thick, with the top measuring 10 mm (0.39 in) and the bottom only 5 mm (0.2 in), clearly the weakest part of these tanks. The top speed and range decreased because of the additional weight. The Ausf. I was never put in production. The next version, the Ausf.J, was a major upgrade produced in 1941 (482 units), with a lengthened hull and increased armor hull, 50 mm (1.97 in) for the frontal glacis. However, it was the late Ausf.J1 that was first equipped with the new KwK 39 L60, much more effective against Russian tanks. This late version was produced until mid-1942 in 1067 units, giving a total production for the Ausf.J of 1549, by far the most numerous variant of the Panzer III.

The Ausf.K was a command version of the J, but different from the former Befehlspanzer versions, as their armament was real. No more dummy guns were used. Production record is unknown. The Ausf.L of early 1942 was the designation of Ausf.J tanks re-equipped with the 50 mm (1.97 in) gun and receiving a further increase in armor protection, additional 20 mm (0.78 in) plates being fitted to the Ausf.J hull. With a total of 70 mm (2.76 in), the new version was able to cope with many antitank guns of the time, including the low velocity guns of both the early T-34 and Shermans. In all, 653 were converted until the last quarter of 1942. They served on all fronts, and were generally considered with respect by enemy crews.

During the fall of 1942, new projects came to completely renew the German armoured forces. These were a new generation tanks, the first of them being the Tiger, followed closely by the Panther, much closer to the modern idea of a perfect “main battle tank”. Considering this, the 1936 Panzer III was seen as obsolete, at least in its antitank role. However, Daimler Benz still found a way how to improve its old battle-hardened tank, They mounted a deep-wading exhaust, for river crossing capabilities on the Ausf. M (250 built until early 1943), and since the beginning, fitted with Schürzen (armoured skirts). In mid-1943 came the last version, the Ausf. N, with a short-barrel 75 mm (2.95 in) KwK 37 L/24 gun capable of firing, for the first time, HEAT projectiles. This tank was the perfect dual-purpose, versatile model, which inspired retrofitting of in earlier versions. Since new specialized tank-hunters and heavy battle tanks were available, the Panzer III was increasingly confined to an infantry support role.

GERMAN PUMA ARMOURED CAR 1/56 SCALE ITALERI KIT

This new armoured car see as a successor to the eight-wheeled (8×8) Panzerspähwagen Sd Kfz 231. Among other priorities, a better protection and heavier armament were included. But this model also derived from an original specification from 1940 which asked for a tropicalized armoured car, and Tatra was charged of the design, while Büssing developed the body, and Daimler-Benz and Schichau were ordered to study a new turret. Three engines were tested, the third being tropicalized in the spring of 1942. However in june 1942, priorities changed and the final production machines had a more conventional air-cooled engine capable to survive great spans of temperature (extreme heat and cold), better suited to the Russian front.

The production vehicle was heavier and bulkier than the Sd Kfz 231, with mudguards that went along the complete side and four storage compartments were located inside. Because of the lack of resources to built the specified new turret, housing a 50 mm gun, the first serie was equipped with the Sd Kfz 222 Hängelafette 38 barbette instead. The engine was a Tatra air-cooled V12 diesel, with a Net HP of 220 @2,250 rpm, and a Power-to-weight ratio of 21 HP/ton. The Transmission was by Claw, with 6 forward and 6 reverse gears. Fuel capacity was 240 liters which for a consumption of 40 liters/100 km. Radios were a FuG Spr Ger “A”2 set, and FuG122 aerial. On the Puma, the main gun was a 50 mm KwK 39/1 L/60. The turret ha a manual traverse due to its small size, and a -10° to +20° depression/elevation. Smoke dischargers were often mounted on top. On trials, the Puma was found capable of fording 3 feet 11 in (1.2 m) deep, crossing a trench 4 ft 5 in (1.35 m) wide and climb a vertical obstacle of 1 feet 7.75 inches or 0.5 m.

GERMAN STUG III ITALERI 1/56 SCALE

The Sturmartillerie Abteilung, or StuG battalion, comprised a headquarter and three Sturmbatteries, each with six vehicles (three platoons of two StuGs). Revised in 1942, this is raised to seven vehicles, the extra StuG being given to the battalion commander. The Sturmartillerie Abteilungs were independent and only under the High Command authority, but, in some cases, a provisional organic inclusion in Divisions was allowed for special tasks. However, these units were rarely put under the command of an artillery commander. Efficient communication had to be ensured to allow a rapid redeployment of the Abteilung in support of various units inside the Division.

The manual states that the firing positions must be chosen with care, and well camouflaged to hide them from ground, but also air observation. A warning is issued not split any platoons into smaller units in order to keep some amount of firepower, and only reserve this practice for exceptional short-duration support missions. Security missions, urban combat or night missions were also disapproved. It was recommended to gradually withdraw these platoons for refuelling and re-supply operations at the rear and, in any case, the vehicles had to be thoroughly serviced after 4/5 days of mission. Due to their lack of vision, close infantry cooperation was required to prevent any encounter with obstacles and mines. The rôle of infantry is especially crucial when dealing with possible side and rear enemy infantry attacks. The manual also strongly recommended surprise at any level of the engagement to ensure maximal lethality. Careful pre-positioning, camouflage, sufficient frontal arc of vision and firing without warning were all considered essential. Planning a safe retreat path, without obstacles to safely withdraw for refuelling and rearm is also noted. Smoke ammunition was to be used in this case and to blind the enemy flanking attacks. But, in the 1942 revision, the total allocated for smoke rounds was reduced to 10% of the total.

As breakthrough operations went, the Sturmartillerie Abteilungs only intervened after the breakthrough was done, but right after the first wave of battle tanks, and way before the arrival of tracked artillery and infantry. They were to secure the flanks, like the Panzer IV, of any anti-tank positions, and to prepare the terrain for infantry to follow, destroying fortified positions, especially concrete bunkers. Close cooperation with flame-thrower carrying assault engineers ensured maximal efficiency. It was recalled that only in the case of very close and very strong infantry support should these tanks be used in urban or forested areas.

German Waffen SS -ordered on demand

Flammenwerfer! Infantry close range combat was always terrifying and deadly; it was deadlier still when flamethrowers were brought into play…Teams were carefully trained in their use. Most commonly formed from Engineer and Pioneer companies. They were brave men indeed as they had to close the range to perhaps 30 yards or less for their frightful weapons to take effect.

Mercifully, more often than not, the threat of the searing flame would bring about a surrender or flight from the enemy, but for those unwilling or unable to take flight, death would come hard.

Flamethrower teams therefore were priority targets for snipers, and certainly on the Russian front, the life of a captured flamethrower crew was measured in minutes, such was the horror they inflicted on their foe.

This set features the Warlord Games Figure Head System. This allows you to choose which heads to attach to your models allowing amazing variety and poseability.

This set contains a two man flame thrower team, a sniper and a spotter.

German Waffen SS Combat Engineers & Goliath-ordered on demand

Bolt Action – Waffen SS Combat Engineers & Goliath

The Goliath was used by the German engineer units in a variety of roles. It was essentially a radio contolled tracked bomb, carrying a big charge of high explosives direct to where it was needed, commonly a pillbox, minefield or disabled enemy tank. The controller steered the robot tank by using a wire connected to a simple contol box.

The Goliath was fairly successful and used on many fronts, and though slow and vulnerable to small arms fire would be a frightening sight as it waddled towards you with its deadly payload!

German Waffen SS-Sturmbataillon Charlemagne-ordered on demand

The Second World War saw many confusing contradictions as politics and ideals clashed in epic campaigns that were once thought inconceivable. One such oddity was the Charlemagne division, the 33. SS-Grenadier Division which fought ferociously for the German cause on the Russian front. They were unusual because they were French citizens who volunteered to join the Legion of French Volunteers against Bolshevism, later to be renamed the Charlemagne Division.

At full strength it consisted of over 11,000 men, all who decided to join the Nazi cause and crush Communism. They fought very well in many battles in Russia and Poland, often against appalling odds and, remarkably, actually broke into Berlin to defend their Führer with 350 remaining men (Unterscharführer Eugene Vaulot destroyed eight Soviet tanks with panzerfausts, earning a Knight’s Cross)!

The men of the Charlemagne Division, marked by their tricolor shoulder badge, were destroyed in Berlin and many met a grim end at the hands of vengeful Free French forces; an understandable but sad end to an elite fighting unit.

This boxed set contains 10 metal miniatures – armed to the teeth with assault rifles, submachine guns (the iconic MP40, looted Soviet PPSh and also the Italian Beretta that was in widespread use by German forces in the latter stages of the war). As you can see there are also panzefausts, an MG42 LMG tam and a sinister SS man with combat knife at the ready!

Each models is supplied with separate heads tp provide you with lots of variety in terms of headgear and posing.

Whilst these miniatures have been specifically sculpted to reflect the Charlemagne troops they can just as easily be painted as any SS unit; all you need to do is remove the tri-colour sleeve badge.

German Waffen-SS Infantry Boxed Set-ordered on demand

Germany’s armed forces in World War II were arguably the best-trained, equipped and motivated of all the major powers – understandably so in a nation geared to rearmament and aggression to its neighbours. Within these powerful forces emerged another force, the Waffen-SS, who were formed initially as armed bodyguards to Adolf Hitler himself, but later became a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

Tough, often lavishly equipped and politically indoctrinated, SS troops formed over 38 divisions and numerous other regimental and battalion-sized units, totaling nearly a million men under arms. Their armoured units won many plaudits for their actions, and although relationships between regular army units and the Waffen-SS were sometimes strained, most SS units fought courageously, sometimes ferociously, against great odds until the wars end in Berlin, 1945.

All models in the Waffen-SS boxed set come with separate heads. Each body type has several head variants available and every boxed set, blister pack or single model reinforcement will be have a random head attached to the base. All you need to do is clip it off and glue it into the locator hole in the models neck. Want your model looking the right? Or perhaps glancing down at his weapon? Perhaps he isn’t wearing a helmet or has a bandaged combat wound? Stacks of options are now open to you through the Figure Head system and we’ll be rolling the system out to future Bolt Action ranges…
The Bolt Action Waffen-SS Boxed Set contains:

• 6-man Command Squad: Officer, NCO with MP40 SMG, 2-man radio team with rifles, Medic and a rifleman

• 9-man squad: 2 NCOs with MP40 SMGs, 2-man MG42 LMG team and 5 riflemen

There are many examples of SS troops fighting well and within the bounds of what we can call ‘civilised war’, but too many incidents of brutality occured for most people’s tastes.

Warlord Games presents some of Germany’s toughest troops, eager to close with their enemies and put their training and equipment to the test…
